Review
Growing up, I was a Star
Wars fan. I know a ridiculous amount of trivia and facts about the original
trilogy. For instance, the name of the planet where Luke lives at the start of
A New Hope, is the same as the location it was filmed in. Tataouine, Tunisia. The planet was called Tatooine. See, ridiculous!
I liked the Star Trek movies but was not a massive fan and wasn’t fussed on the series.
All this has changed over the years. With the constant tinkering of the original Star Wars films (Greedo shot first), the new prequels and all the constant selling out of the franchise such as adverts (Yoda selling mobile network suppliers???) and the talk of new films and even a series.
Star Trek on the other hand has seemed to shake its ridiculous endless spin-off series and its lack of appeal to me.

JJ Abrams created something
pretty spectacular with a superb story for the reboot of the franchise a few
years ago and I relished the changes, ideas and spin on the classic Williams
Shatner sci-fi series/ films.
Last night (Thursday 30th April) I wandered into my local cinema to watch the latest creation from Abrams. I was not disappointed. Here are some words on what I thought. There is a SPOILER section at the bottom, clearly marked. Move down below that line, ONLY if you have seen the film.
My overall opinion is, Outstanding. I would have given it a 10 if JJ had left out his signature lens flare and there were a few scenes that they should have removed (see spoiler section).
Cumberbatch was without question, the finest piece in it. Quinto has hit a high and his characterisation of Spock was superb. The score was incredible and as it is supposed to do, it complimented the film and enhanced more than a few scenes.
Add to that, several emotional scenes, with some great dialogue, beautifully delivered by a plethora of the series regulars.

The costume department
deserve every award there is. The difference in Star Fleet uniform was superb
and the crisp clean full dress is beautiful, complete with peaked cap.
Simon Pegg seemed to move his Scotty away from the humour of the first and took on a few hard hitting scenes that really developed the character.
Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana seemed to put in the same performance from the first and not much changed with these two.
Sulu and Chekov, stood up to the plate and excelled in their performance as crew members with more to them than just helmsman and navigator. More so for Sulu who really came on leaps and bounds in his character arc. John Ocho’s deliverance of the ‘surrender’ scene was eye-opening.
Sadly, what I loved about Urbans portrayal of Bones from the first of Abrams reboot, seemed to be playing second fiddle to everyone around him and just seemed to be shoe-horned into most scenes he was in. This with the inclusion of the film’s worst piece of dialogue (see spoiler section) made this to one of the film’s few weak points,
Add to that with the inclusion of some terrific CGI and top notch sound/ sound effects and a reduction of some of the slapstick humour of its predecessor.
#OneWordReview Trektastic - 9/10.
